We’ve moved into our mother’s house it seems, but she isn’t there. We’re still keeping the cats and a broad selection of other animals, including a large bat which has two young that it suckles on a wall over the kitchen table. Some gigantic ants (nearly two inches long) come into the house through a crack over the sliding glass door. I spray them with ant killer and worry that this will hurt the baby bats, though they are far across the room. Most of the giant ants turn out to be dead already and clumped together in a huge pile, like a multiple car pileup on a road.

I don’t think that apologizing is a sign of weakness. Like many of my closest friends, I feel that an apology is a sign of personal strength and integrity.

Still no care packages for soldiers from me. I stand by what I have said on that subject.

The grandstanding of some bloggers who are making care packages to send off to soldiers is misplaced. I can imagine the pain in some soldiers as they think of the families scraping by back at home while they eat chocolate bars.

Photos of “our boys” show them to be relatively fat and happy compared to these children. They will be in the crucible for a matter of weeks. The children of Iraq were born to this horror and they’ve been in it for years.
