War Blogging

  • Annie sent along a link from Der Spiegel which is similar in perspective to the Scott Rosenberg piece that I commented on below. I want to make this comment about the reference to the allusion to Gulliver unbound. Gulliver’s behavior in the first book of his travels is exemplary, not unlike that of many blog pundits. The behavior of George Bush is more like that of the Lilliputians. Think of them swarming all over the body of Modern Earth and you will have a more fitting metaphor for the Bush madness.

  • Tuesday offered a new definition of the meaning of world: “The collection of nations and peoples which thinks George Bush is out of his freakin’ mind.”

  • Mileah took a walk out by Point Arena Lighthouse and despairs for her previously “short-sighted thinking”.

  • Christopher reports that the hits are coming into Bagdhad. The United States now stands in breach of International Law.

  • blu iguana came back to life to report that Stinni, an American ex-patriate in Kuwait, is getting the hell out of there.

  • Raye points us to a Peace Poster competition sponsored by Melanie. Keep the faith!

  • Crazy Tracy wants to know what the war is going to do to her book deal?

  • Raed wrote that there was still nothing happening in Bagdhad as of 6:40 am on Thursday. He remarks:

The worst is seeing and feeling the city come to a halt. Nothing. No buying, no selling, no people running after buses. We drove home quickly. At least inside it did not feel so sad.

  • Cinnamon is glad to see that Kevin Sites is broadcasting live from Iraq for CNN. I’m not so excited: undoubtably, his reports will be edited and skewed towards the American viewpoint which is that we’re going in there to slaughter and liberate the inhabitants.

  • Jeremy got a laugh from posting the list of countries united against Iraq.

  • Allison is one of a number of bloggers who is questioning the death of Rachel Corrie.

  • Mizzy is selling T-shirts with slogans like “My daddy went to war and all I got was this stupid corpse”

  • Tanya posted a dark comedic masterpiece of a conversation between a peace activist and a die-hard conservative:

PN: So why are we invading Iraq instead of using
    diplomacy?

WM: Aren't you listening? We are invading Iraq because
we cannot allow the inspections to drag on indefinitely.
Iraq has been delaying, deceiving, and denying for over
ten years, and inspections cost us tens of millions.

PN: But I thought war would cost us tens of billions.

WM: Yes, but this is not about money. This is about
    security.

  • Check Mute Troubadour’s tag board for a discussion of blizzards in the Congo.

  • Andrea says:

Once the novelty of the war is over, we shouldn’t forget them. We shouldn’t be distracted by the next shiny, exciting thing that happens on the news. But I know most of us (myself included) will.

  • The other Andrea reports that according to Ari Fleischer, “the disarmament of Iraq has begun”

  • A fitting coda to this list is provided by Al Muhajabah who writes:

I pray that the troops will return home soon and safe. I pray that the damage to the people and country of Iraq will be minimal and that there will soon be peace and freedom there. I pray that God will bring about the best outcome from this and that good and not evil will result.

Elsewhere, chari and I have been fighting and reconciling like brother and sister, again. Steve Les Jenkins has been adopted into the family, apparently.

For respite from all the war blogging, I recommend: Artichoke Heart, Forty Something, In Sequence, Reconstructed Mind, and Slowly Going Over the Edge

And you can still light a candle for peace.
