War Blogging

Posted on March 22, 2003 in Crosstalk Pointers

There’s a lot of nasty stuff going around as people state where they are about the war. All the people I’ve listed today I respect for speaking their minds. I do not agree with every position. Give them some credit for having the guts to speak truthfully. If you have a disagreement with any of them, state what you think civilly and don’t crap up their blog with long debates unless they seem to thrive on it.

  • Tuesday has been reporting conversations that she’s been having and things she’s seen in the newspaper. She writes:

According to some annoying chick I played Yahoo! Euchre against: The children of Baghdad are not dying because their entire city is on fire because the United States is bombing them to death. The children left the city and went to Isreal. Oh yes, she said that. Seriously.

  • Lynn posted some “scattered thoughts at the start of the war“.

  • Mileah declared her fearful ambivalence about the war in Iraq:

I have always been partial to the special kind of person it takes to stand on that wall and watch over the rest of us. Saddam is a terrible, terrible tyrant. I am simply not convinced that this war will do what Shrub suggests. Bush’s contention that this action will stabilize the Middle East and prevent terrorism is fatally flawed. I believe this action will increase the danger of terrorism both here and abroad. I believe this action will make us an occupying force in an Arab country and if that doesn’t bring out the zealots and psychos, I don’t know what will.

  • Christopher is trying to raise enough money to put him in the field. He reports that CNN closed down Kevin Sites who was reporting live from Iraq.

  • Billy caught a local gas station trying to cash in on jingoism.

  • Raye has put a yellow ribbon up on her site. She remains opposed to the war and Bush’s Middle East policies. Her personal reconciliation appears in an article entitled My Position and a self defense entitled One More Time. My personal advice at this point to commentators is state what you think and leave it. There’s enough harassment and snippiness going around. We don’t need an epidemic.

  • Andrew posted the news that a British television crew has gone missing and an Australian has been the victim of a car bombing in Iraq. More disturbing are his current figures from Reporters Without Borders who mention that 47 cyberdissidents have been imprisoned. Let us unite with those who speak freely before they come for us.

  • Raed’s last bit of news was that nine B-52s were on their way. He’s been silent since Friday, his time. This does not bode well.

  • Elkit writes “I can’t say that I understand exactly how gridlocking traffic and trying to close down the Bay Bridge is anti-war.” Me either.

  • Jennifer shared a sign that she saw at a demonstration.

  • Jeremy has created a green ribbon campaign to counter the yellow ribbons:

Support All Life: End All War

Actually he got the idea from me. I came up with the color and he developed the slogan and did the web page.

  • Alison describes the news of the nine B-52s heading for Iraq as “a taste of terror“.

  • Teresa has broken her silence to recall an exhibit of works by Goya including his The Disasters of War. It is always interesting to visit her blog with her insights into the way we see the issues of our time.

  • Jill posted some pictures of the San Francisco demonstrations that she touts for the way that they “capture the intensity, the passion, and the fierceness of both the protesters and the cops.”

  • Enough is enough! Tanya writes:

I will be taking a small break from the “Bush is a punk-assed bitch” posts for one week, and instead will be focussing on my efforts to post more inane, silly, unproductive, pointless shit for the next month. This I do for you. Because I care. Because I am a giver.

Thank you, Madame Fabulous. You’re earning the name.

  • Doug, the Mute Troubadour, declares his unwillingness to depart from his duty as a minister to preach about Scripture. No op ed pieces on Iraq from his pulpit, even though he is strongly against the war.

  • Andrea the Shameless Agitator has her duck taped.

  • Andrea the Serial Deviant prophesies:

After the War on Terror there might be the War on Unintended Consequences, then the War on Unintended Consequences from the War on Unintended Consequences. And so it goes. I’m sure they’ll have catchier names for them, though.

  • “last night, a spectacular display of light and stunning firepower marked the loss of my innocence, forever” writes M.

  • Les has thrown in the towel on war commentary for the time being.

  • chari’s off to visit Elvis.

I point again to the Oxfam Campaign for Iraq.
