A Confession

I have a confession to make. Joel is a product of my imagination. The model is a guy I got to pose for me in return for a six pack of beer, the “mother” described in some of “Joel’s” blog posts is a fictional creation based on my late great-aunt Gertrude, and the “cousin Steve” is purely imaginary. For years, I have been posting to Usenet in this guy’s name, running MUSHes as him, and hanging out on IRC pretending to be him. Pretending to be Joel has given me a chance to speak with a force and passion which I lacked as Lynn, and to explore kinds of writing which I had not dared to attempt before. But it is time for an end; I can keep up the pretense no more.
