State of Caring

Posted on April 2, 2003 in Appeals and Goodwill

Old news, but in this time of war, it’s worth a second look.

Do you live in a stingy state?

According to the United Way State of Caring index, the stingiest states in the country are (from bottom to top):

  • Lousiana
  • New Mexico
  • Arizona
  • Mississippi
  • Arkansas
  • Nevada
  • Texas
  • South Carolina
  • Florida
  • Tennessee

Before I gloat, I must note that my home state of California placed 38th — just missing the bottom ten.

The most generous states are:

  • Minnesota
  • New Hampshire
  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • Maine
  • Iowa
  • Vermont
  • Wisconsin
  • South Dakota
  • North Dakota

I can, off hand, see a few rough correlations. Stingy states tend to have the death penalty and vote reactionary. The more generous states tend to vote liberal and don’t usually have the death penalty.

I suspect that support for vs. opposition to Mr. Bush’s war would follow a similar map.
