I dreamed that I was rising from bed and walking down the hall. I practiced each step before I took it beneath the sheets. I took it. Then I was back in bed, practicing the next sequence of steps which included the first step I took. And so on. With great effort I walked down the blank hallway and found myself at the foot of a ladder, which I climbed to a submarine hatch. I opened it, looked out. A cyclopean steel wall — a battleship — floated next to the sub. I ordered a mine attached to the hull. Then we dived, dived. I gave another order: Detonate the explosive. The deep rumbled with the death. We surfaced and listened to the radio. “Where had this come from? Who did this? How did it happen?” I realized that I had surprised them, that they could not contend with a new force which thought between their holes.
