Note: This is eighth in a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.
Today’s topic: One thing can’t be denied….
….and that is that the Truth Sucks. Not always, but often it’s the sting of an antiseptic on a cut you don’t want to see, a scrape that you picked up God knows where that calls attention to itself when it starts to bleed through your white pants. It’s the bone cancer that your physician turns up in a blood sample and confirms when he has to go under the skin with a scalpel to take a shred of marrow. You can go on doing nothing about it — and most people do when it’s a matter of the body politic — or you can undergo the chemotherapy that you need to kill it the rogue cells that are distorting the way you think. That’s what it is like being an American and instead of changing the national habit of the lie, we keep on chain smoking, keep on eating too much for our own good, keep paying taxes for the oppression of foreign peoples, keep slaving away for a pittance because we’re sure that even though we’re not in the top 1% of earners now, we soon will be even though we’re only making the minimum wage.
Want to participate? First either get yourself a copy of A Writer’s Book of Days by Judy Reeves or read these guidelines. Then either check in to see what the prompt for the day is or read along in the book.
Tomorrow’ topic/prompt: Write about a year ago.
