My grandfather, Francis, came from the Val d’Aosta, an autonomous region of Italy where most of the population are Francophones. He was educated in Paris. My great grandfather, Napoleon, also came from the Val d’Aosta. He married a French woman named Caesirine. Together, they gave birth to my grandmother Stella, who Francis married.
The current anti-French hysteria is uncalled for. Every French American should stand up and be counted. “We are here” should be our message, and we have contributed — from the beginning to American freedom. And today, we are proud that our Gallic cousins and siblings have the courage to stand up for world freedom and self-determination of peoples everywhere.
We still call them French Fries, French Vanilla, French Toast, French Kisses. We are not ashamed, either of having French blood or being American citizens. We shall not allow racists and jingoists in Washington to put down our contributions to the national culture without comment. We shall speak up and we shall be proud.
We’re crazy for BOTH the Red, White, and Blues.
