Sharp Little Kitten Claws

Posted on May 28, 2003 in Cats

It didn’t take long for Fiona and Boadicea to start climbing over the gate into the part of the house which we have reserved for Virginia Mew. Virginia’s fine as long as they back off when she hisses. Boadicea was so moved by her first encounter that she ran all the way back to the gate and and climbed over it into the office. Fiona is a little thick: last night she cornered Virginia in the litter box. She was torn between holding her ground and slinking off. Finally she crawled around the litter box and into a deeper recess of the closet.

They respect the gate marginally. It’s mainly there to slow them down so I can keep track of them. It’s also proving to be a distracting play thing. I’ve seen them climb to one side and then climb back over it, just for the thrill.

Occasionally, one of them gets stuck at the top. I come over and offer to help. Boadicea leaps to the ground. Fiona, on the other hand, embraces the top with all four paws and cries pathetically. She rolls to one side, still clinging with all four paws. I intervene and she thanks me with pricks from her needle sharp little kitten claws. All four paws. Mewing pathetically until I lay her gently on the floor.
