Acrostics

Posted on July 9, 2003 in Poems

I’ve been playing with acrostic poems. The rule is that you spell out the word vertically on the left and then write only one or two words per line. The words must somehow describe or depict an aspect of the thing named. For example, I wrote:

Roadkill eater

Asphalt feathering.

Voracious

Eater of carrion

Nevermore!

OK, I cheated slightly in line four. But “of” is barely a word.

Phine art of

Hopping evasively

Insert

Logical fallacy

Output

Sophistry

Openly

Pendantic

Hammering reason

Yammering endlessly

And then there’s

Simple folk

Language

Asshole speech

Nonstandard.

Go fuck yourself.

How about writing some of your own?

Here’s a few words you could try:

  • WEBLOG
  • FLAME
  • SPARROW
  • GEORGE W BUSH
  • IRAQ
  • AFGHANISTAN
  • LIBERTY
  • YELLOW

Feel free to come up with your own and post them here.
