Going to Bed

Posted on July 28, 2003 in Book of Days Cats

Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.

Today’s topic: Every night….

Every night, Lynn goes to bed before I do. Boadicea climbs on top of the scratching post behind my desk chair. Fiona sleeps in the living room. Virginia Mew vanishes utterly.

About half an hour after Lynn goes to bed, Fiona enters the bedroom and begins chasing her tail on the bed. Boadicea hears the sound and goes to join her sister. The two of them rush about over Lynn’s prone body until one of them bites her nose or scratches her cheek. Then there’s a shout “No no no NO!” and the slam of a door. Two kittens stagger from the hallway to the office. What have we done? Why are we exiled? And they sleep until I go to bed three hours later, when Boadicea follows me and curls us between Lynn and myself, remaining there until hunger pangs rouse her at about five a.m.

Lynn just vacuumed the living room and the hall. Fiona was trapped in a corner while Boadicea was fortunately at the litter box. Boadicea retreated to the scratching post until she heard the click of the broom closet door. Then she ran out to seize the feather cat teaser before Fiona could and run with it back to the bedroom and then the office.
