Fossil Hunt at Pectin Reef

Posted on August 3, 2003 in Photos The Orange

We went fossil-hunting today. Legitimate fossil hunting with a camera and a notebook. Everything we saw, we left in place. But one fellow who I saw didn’t live by these rules. This middle-aged, wavy-haired moustachioed excuse for a citizen combed the fields around Pectin Reef looking for shells. I took his picture, yanked out my cell phone, and called the cops on him. I have a thing, you see, about the jerks who steal from the public trust and put it up on eBay. I want those fossils to be there for you to see.

Most of the fossils in the photos are embedded in rock and therefore immovable. The shell fragments that I found on the trail got thrown back into the brush.
