An Unseen Argument

Posted on August 11, 2003 in Book of Days Neighborhood

Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.

Today’s topic: This is what the neighbors saw.

The other night I heard a couple screaming at each other. “I want you out of my life!” shouted the man. Words that I didn’t understand came back at him. The conversation got low, though I could tell by the prickly consonants and thudding vowels that they hadn’t made peace. I wanted to say “Why are you talking of these things on a night like this? Don’t you know that the heat makes you crazy?”

I got up and wandered over to the screen door as Lynn read Living History in the lemon-loud butterfly chair. The street looked blue, the lights from the condos glowing orange like steady, unflickering fires. I couldn’t tell who was doing the shouting. I hoped that when the clouds came later in the week they’d see things differently and that no one would end up dead.

Want to participate? First either get yourself a copy of A Writer’s Book of Days by Judy Reeves or read these guidelines. Then either check in to see what the prompt for the day is or read along in the book.

Tomorrow’ topic/prompt: Write about something that made you cry.
