Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.
Today’s topic: Write about the silent treatment.
I’m overdue for the silent treatment by the voices in my head.
As any practioner of torture knows, nothing wounds as deeply as nonstatement and noninteraction. “Why, it’s not worth my time talking to you. I shall act as if you are dead.”
My inner critics — who use so well the other artifices of abusive speech — haven’t caught on to this devastating techique. Being a kind man and always eager to help even those who eviscerate me, I shall commend to them the study of this nonverbal warfare. “Just sit there, steam and say nothing,” I advise them. “I promise it will undo me more thoroughly than anything you have ever shouted at my brain before.”
Want to participate? First either get yourself a copy of A Writer’s Book of Days by Judy Reeves or read these guidelines. Then either check in to see what the prompt for the day is or read along in the book.
Tomorrow’ topic/prompt: Write about stealing time.
