Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.
Today’s topic: Write about your neighborhood at 5 P.M.
Summer is over and the go-peds are silent. The kids play games until the hour and then rush inside to be at the kitchen table before their parents return home. The streets catch the late afternoon light. On cloudless days, they glow the color of a thin film of orange juice; when fog or clouds block the sun, they range between gray and white, but not silver. From five until the first parent returns home to fix dinner and manage the kids, I enjoy silence. Hollow, hollow all delight! I can almost hear Sir Gawain’s ghost exclaim. As Nannette would say “Indeed.”
Want to participate? First either get yourself a copy of A Writer’s Book of Days by Judy Reeves or read these guidelines. Then either check in to see what the prompt for the day is or read along in the book.
Tomorrow’ topic/prompt: You eavesdrop on a conversation. What do you hear?
