Goodbye Kiril

Posted on September 26, 2003 in Crosstalk

I hate to break a silence in this manner.

There’s a subtle trick that some conservatives — especially the recently converted — play to get you tangled up in their name-calling game. Observe this title at Sneakeasy’s Joint:

Sneakeasy Not an Idiot! Conservatives in Shock!

He then goes on to enumerate why he is now a Republican.

People can change their minds. Sea-changes happen. But as Kiril departs from the Democratic Party, he covers his retreat with something like a double-bind: if I don’t agree with him, it is implied that I am saying that he is an idiot and that I am saying that I am an idiot.

I don’t think either is the case. Intelligent people can arrive at faulty conclusions and that is why we have free speech in this country. I can disagree with my friends, but I cannot suffer abuse of the sort that Kiril now delivers with scattershot at all who disagree with him.

You can put words in my mouth, but you can’t expect me to respect you for it.

It may seem clever to Kiril, but he’s lost a friend with tactics like that and this and this.

I leave it to all my readers to consider both sides and make up their own minds.
