Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.
Today’s topic: Night is falling. You’re not at home.
Which means that I must be at the Aliso Viejo Barnes and Nobel doing something.
It’s seldom light when I leave whatever activity I’ve gone there to attend these days. This week was busy: Monday was the writing critique group, Wednesday was the Cafe Writers’ practice group, Thursday was the Open Mike Poetry Reading, and tonight I dropped by to pick up a book I’d left behind the register.
The other day, the fellow in the cafe started to ring up my employee discount. “Excuse me?” I said. “I don’t work here.”
The confusion comes because I do volunteer to facilitate the Cafe Writers and because I often show up to interesting author signings. When no fewer than three people asked me if I lived in the place tonight, I decided that enough was enough: I’m not showing until Wednesday.
Unless Nannette gets Al Franken to show for a signing.
Want to participate? First either get yourself a copy of A Writer’s Book of Days by Judy Reeves or read these guidelines. Then either check in to see what the prompt for the day is or read along in the book.
Tomorrow’ topic/prompt: Write about a time the lights went out.
