We sneaked into the sacristy and nosed among the monks’ personal belongings while no one was looking. Plenty of other people did the same — I’m not so sure it was a prohibited area and when we ran into a monk, he just wanted to know if we were waiting for confession.

I’m sure that if I’d taken him up on his offer, he would have had to cut me off after three hours. I’ve done a few things in my time (mostly skip mass) that would not sit well with the Church.

This was a day of peace, however, and I kept mine.
