Mute Troubadour on the American Dispensation

Posted on December 4, 2003 in Irony & Sarcasm Myths & Mysticism

doug the Mute Troubadour has brilliantly expressed the character of American Christi-inanity:

God has granted American christians what is known in socio-theological circles as the “"American
Dispensation"
“. Simply put, God knows a good thing when he sees one, so American christians are excused from the observances of other Christians in other places, and even other times. For instance, if you put a “Honk if you love Jesus” sticker on your car it’s perfectly acceptable to flip off anyone who honks at you. Slap a fish symbol on your vehicle, and, as Owen reported, you may drive with the same impunity as any heathen — more impunity, actually, since you’re under a divine dispensation; it’s like having unrestricted sovereign immunity….

The best part of the “"American
Dispensation"
” is that it releases you from certain niggling scriptures that interfere with one’s personal liberty. Pretty much all of Paul’ stuff goes by the boards, and the Sermon on the Mount, and most of the parables, along with James and 1 John. Well, except for ceremonial purposes, most of the Bible is set aside and we just rely on what popular commentators and preachers say about it.

What doug forgets to mention is that it is because of the "American
Dispensation"
that we are permitted to gripe about that portion of our taxes which go to help the poor, consider the 2000 election legitimate, call Fox News “fair and balanced”, and, best of all, blast Iraqi civilians into thousands of colorful fragments just as long as we put signs in our front lawns with the words “God Bless America Support Our Troops, visit Saddleback Church”.

Maybe that last one’s just a local thing.
