More Latin for Chat

Posted on December 25, 2003 in IRC/Chat Reading

I got the urge to look up more Latin for chat. These were helpful to me in an argument about whether or not Bush said that there were WMDs in Iraq or not! To those who claim that there were such weapons at the time of his State of the Union, I point and say onus probandi!

  • argumentum ad populum –> an appeal to people’s lower nature rather than their intellect
  • dictum de dicto –> a secondhand story (hearsay)
  • dolosus versatur in generalibus –> the deceiver deals in general terms
  • mortuo leoni et lepores insultant –> even hares insult a dead lion

  • nemo cogitationis poenam patitur –> no one should suffer for his/her thoughts
  • nemo est supra leges –> no one is above the law

  • onus probandi –> burden of proof

These, like my previous offerings, came from More Latin for the Illiterati: A Guide to Everyday Medical, Legal and Religious Latin
