Weekend Chills

square057.gifFor the sake of Valentine’s Day — that feast of love — and because I don’t like clouding my birthday, I kept my silence on political matters. Others did not and you may wish to read their horror stories about life in George W. Bush’s America:

  • Balkinization noted the presence of U.S. Army personnel at a conference on Islam who were taking names of participants!
  • Beautiful Horizons is appalled that the only area of the world whose foreign aid is getting cut is Latin America where democracy is most fragile. Is it that Bush does not have a clue or is he trying to bring back the “good old days” of corruption and oppression?
  • Body and Soul spreads out the evidence that the Department of Homeland Security is shopping for anti-Bush, anti-Ashcroft items at your local mall.
  • Andrew reprinted a story about fifteen ships belonging to Al Quaeda which are travelling the world today delivering explosives to terrorist targets throughout the world.
  • Rob chortled at the Day of Purity sponsored by the so-called Liberty Counsel. Seems that the Right is out to distort the meaning of Liberty and Freedom just as male homosexuals changed the meaning of “gay” and with far more odious consequences. He missed the quote by Ogden Nash: “Purity/is obscurity.”
  • Allison quoted a piece by Republican Ron Paul about how the war on terrorism is being lost by the Bush Administration and the Libertine Republicans in Congress.
  • Victoria muses over some questions from We Have Brains about the status and future of feminism. She concludes that it is not dead yet though there are reasons for concern.
  • -d grumbles about the apology CBS delivered regarding the performance of Outkast. “The problem with PC it doesn’t address the real problem. We need to start showing some respect to each other. SCREW PC… show me some respect here!”
  • The Gutless Pacifist says that the Ten Commandments are back on display in Alabama. This time, however, apologists claim that they aren’t promoting religion by being there. Yeah, right. I want my Eightfold Path up there.

Of course a lot of people are commenting about San Francisco’s decision to grant marriage licenses to gay couples. But that’s no shiver except of delight.
