Keyboard Mystery

This is a picture of the left side of our keyboard. The right side doesn’t have the same nuclear meltdown look as the left. The board is three years old and fully functional as long as you are a touch typist.

Yes, those are hairs from my beard strangling the X key.

We have not exposed the keys to cigarettes, blowtorch, or other source of flame. Neither of us has been electrocuted. I have never known my cats to pee on the keyboard, though I have spilled Coke on it. But I think it was on the other side.

Can anyone explain the nature of this damage to me?
