A final piece from the notebook.
[Too many] Christians think that the way to gain converts is to make outsiders feel miserable until they join. Don’t feed the homeless unless you make them hear a prayer or a sermon. If I had a relief shelter, I would play good music of all varieties. I would serve good food, set up a paperback exchange which I had seeded with a few personal favorites, have private rooms…
The poor are materialistic but the wealthy want power, not just to own objects but to own people, too. This is a sickness. Controlling, manipulative people will not seek psychiatric help unless their strategy starts to fail them. Then they want to know what they can do to get people back under their thumbs. That’s the real sickness and the real sin.
