We all have country which we recognize as home. This variety — the chaparral — is where I feel in my place.
This trail runs in sight of my house, but at the top of a long scarp. It may as well be in another part of the state. Here I go to listen to the towhees and the wrens, see red-tails fly and study the sign left by coyotes.
There are fossils in some of the rocks. Last week I saw the season’s first Matilija Poppies.
