Urban photos work best for me when I visualize buildings as rock formations and streets as rivers. The pyramids, after all, were piled in imitation of mountains; these skyscrapers strike me as little Yosemites or Zions set atop the bluffs.
The truth is that we can’t escape nature when we flee to the city. As surely as the fabled guano islands off the coast of Peru were deposited by evolution’s creatures, so, too, do our towns derive from things spawned through DNA. I don’t think this gives us license to trash the planet, but I find it useful as a way of looking at that aspect of my work that I call my “urbanalities”.
Thanks again to Skits for the concept and the opportunity of this gathering. There will be one more set of pictures from this trip. Then it’s off to Valyermo for the festival.
