Separatism: The New Codeword for Racism

When practiced by the Right, politics is a shell game. You think the pea is under the shell called “racism”? Ah ha! Foolish liberal! We’re not about Racism. We’re about Separatism!

This is the retort that fell from the lips of Virginia Abernethy, the newly appointed director of Protect Arizona Now, who lives in Nashville, Tennesee. “We’re not saying anything about supremacy, not at all,” she said to the Arizona Republic. “We’re saying that each ethnic group is often happier with its own kind.” In other words, she liked those days when whites had their own water fountains. Surely African Americans miss their private bathrooms and reserved seats in the back of the bus?
