I’ve had it ever since I neglected to keep changing the oil in my Volkswagen Squareback, a lesson I did not repeat with this car. Yesterday, it kept stopping at lights all the way between here and Santa Ana and back again. Lynn took it into the mechanic: the transmission had finally bit the dust. The two of us had put nearly 280,000 miles on the beast.
So in the morning, we collect our things and say goodbye. There’s no shame here. It served us well.
