Archive Templates?

What is currently distressing me is my inability to determine how the archives are formatted. I would like to set up the category and the monthly archives as I had them on Movable Type where each article contained an excerpt and a link to the permanent page. The trouble is that I do not know where the appropriate template may be found. Good advice will be treated as precious and the giver held in the highest esteem..
