Plundering Our Future

Posted on September 3, 2004 in Campaign 2004 Class Liberals & Progressives

square282.gifThe Liberals Giveth, the Freebooters Taketh Away. This is what Bush promised to do tonight. To cover the deficit he caused with his wastrel ways, he intends to rob you and me of the money the government has banked away for our retirement. Social Security is his newest target and if you are not a millionaire, you will lose and your children will lose.

During the Vietnam War, a cartoon showed Lyndon B. Johnson throwing the babies of his Great Society to the Wolf that was the Vietnam War. Johnson was, at least, running, but George W. Bush is walking up to the wolf and patting it on the head as he gives our common earnings to its voracious appetite.

This “Ownership Society” that he preaches bears strong resemblance to the Enclosures Act which was passed in England under the last George III who plagued America. The principle is the same: take what is owned by the People in common and give it to the wealthy and powerful. You will lose part of your salary forever, now, to the corporations whose appetites propel the Iraq War. This will not mean better equipment for soldiers in the field. This will not mean more jobs. It will simply be YOU paying off the debt which George W. Bush incurred in your name when you were blinded by his terrorism hystrionics.

Here’s a basic economic lesson:

Let’s do the math. OK, class, we all buy stock this afternoon to fund our
retirement. In fifteen years, baby-boomers are ready to kick back, take
it easy and retire on the stock they’re about to sell. Did I say, “SELL”?
And HOW. Around 2020, tens of millions of “owners” will be selling their
shares … to whom? CRRRRASH!

A deliberate policy of aiming for another 1929 is appropriate for the
top-hat and pinky-ring party of Herbert Hoover.

We have reached the point of the most profound and important struggle since the Civil War. Who owns America? If you think that somehow, we can follow the road of so-called “free-market economics” and not end up as feudal serfs to the Bushes and their ilk, then perhaps you deserve the fight night the Republican Party has in store for you and for your children. Otherwise, it behooves you to stand on your hind feet. If you cannot stomach the Democrats, do yourself the favor of voting Libertarian. An election is supposed to be about following your conscience: what they propose to do with your hard-earned money is unconscienable.
