While exploring the website of the science program Nova, I found this page which talks about why the World Trade Center collapsed. A video from the program on that site talks about how engineers are examining the blast to see how they can make future office buildings of the style more formidable. This strikes me as more of the same short-sighted thinking that led to the attacks in the first place. We prefer to make our country into a bastion to making it friendly to all peoples. Does this mean that we have given up hope, that we have terrorized ourselves into thinking that the rest of the world wants nothing except our end? Maybe so. Maybe we should work on the science of human relationships and diplomacy as a cheaper alternative to fortifying our offices and our homes.
