A woman, who seemed irritated that the hospital lobby wasn’t gated like Dove Canyon or Coto de Caza, sat in one of the comfortable chairs complaining about the state of medicine today to an elderly man. “The trouble is,” she said, “they just don’t let smart people into the medical profession anymore. My children were thinking of becoming doctors, but they took one look at the costs and went to business school instead.”
Quietly, under my breath, I murmured a little prayer of thanks.
