I was primed to be insulted. “That turkey’s back!” Christina shouted as I came down the walk. She looked at me and pointed to her left. I shuffled forward to see what poor person had earned her ire.
I gather the bird is named Mildred and that she made the front page of The Register last week. She’s been hanging around Christina’s garden, eating scraps of bread that my neighbor’s daughter has been doling out. This bird will probably not see Thanksgiving. Here in Trabuco Canyon — as long as she stays among the houses and the condos — she’s as safe as the fowl who mooch from tourists at the Zion National Park Lodge.
Here she is perched on the roof of a nearby townhouse.
If you’re wondering about the pigeon I caught in my cell phone lense the other day, we met on Chapman in Orange. It was just sitting in a doorway trying to stay out of the rain. I walked right up and took the picture from a few inches away.
