The “challenge word” that the City of Mission Viejo saw fit to post at the corner of La Paz and Maguerite this month is “Persevere”. It’s a good word when it is not used as a way to blame us for our failures. Persevere. Up from the hospital bed, I can take this word to heart. But at the same time, I see the reality of my situation here on top of Portola Hills, this neighborhood built with no social centers other than private clubs and swimming pools. If I am to persevere, I need to find means to build a life upon. I am not a monk nor a hermit. I need people. The ones who planned this place just assumed that everyone who lives here would go to work during the day and watch television in the evening. It’s just not true.
To persevere, I need to figure out a workable goal that goes along with my dreams.
