Insert a Trite Metaphor for a Corral

Posted on October 3, 2005 in Roundup

This roundup covers the period from 26 September 2005 to 2 October 2005.

square154Fate ordains that I shall travel to Texas later this week, a fact which has nothing to do with this blog except for the association of that state with a certain artifact of the title.

What a week it was! Despite saying absolutely nothing about his judicial philosophy, John Roberts was confirmed as Chief Justice. The splash wet the faces of many a liberal blogger, me included. More than a few wondered why the Democrats had not fought his appointment, why Patrick Leahy among others had knelt before King George III and given the unlawful sire of the land his undeserved due.

Of course there were other stories: war pornography; the forced disappearances treaty that Bush may well dodge; life on Mars; civil war in Iraq; banned books; stupid rebuttals against global warming; Dick Cheney’s surgery; Larry King wonders if tornadoes are “a natural occurance”; landmines as environmental protection; the goddess Jackie Spier; Michael Brown finds a consulting job at FEMA; tourists warned about Florida’s “shoot first” law; how Democrats can reclaim the Senate — if they only try; Cindy Sheehan arrested; the GOP revolts against the GOP’s overspending; death in the ring; people who say that they wash their hands when they leave the bathroom are usually liars; no more delays in getting Delay; fundamentalist bullies (isn’t that redundant?); Ashley Smith used The Purpose-Driven Life and a little crystal meth to save her life; freeze dried corpses; the story of an abortion; the many faces of Bob Woodward; the demise of California’s universal marriage bill; how certain varieties of religion breed hatred (see my argument over the validity of data showing that 12 Steps Programs are good for bipolars); militarization and rapture fantasies; unintelligent attacks on scientists by intelligent design proponents; colossal squid — Cthulhu rising?; personal accounts of global warming; standing up for the real America (hint: it has nothing to do with the politics of George W. Bush and his cronies); the fossil-fossils of De-Na-Zin; why Vatican decrees sound contradictory; sterilizing Republicans; X-mice; autumn; the border of desparation — and it’s not where you think; women and their choices; Bush buys the news he wants; hoarding of flu cultures by the CDC; and Santa Ana winds.
