I woke up sneezing, convulsively. The boom from my lungs vented stagnant air and gave my head a kick like a nitrous snort. A frosty sensation around my nostrils heralded the incursion of something livelier than mere pollen, something that would propagate and colonize. Bacteria built themselves a harbor along my nasal shoreline and prepared to act out their manifest destiny in a march to the deepest pleural chamber. From open air to cul-de-sac instead of from sea to shining sea.
