Think of this when the mosquitoes start to swarm, when chiggers get beneath your skin, or you find a tick crawling on you seeking a place to sink its head: Cookie cutter sharks fill an odd niche. They cruise the seas searching for marine mammals and fish several times their size. Turning torpedo, they ram the dolphins or whales or seals in the side, taking a nice round piece of flesh. The prey usually survives — the cookie-cutter shark does not run in schools, fortunately.
