I’ve gone down to Mexico before to observe the festivities in their native land, but this year, I plan to hang around to see what my fellow Americans are going to do. Teresa from In Sequence put me on to the annual Day of the Dead festivities at Olvera Street in Los Angeles. We’re not sure yet whether we’ll go on Friday night for the “welcoming of the dead” or Saturday when the plaza is sure to be packed.
I’m leaning towards Friday, myself. I’d like to be there to welcome Senator Paul Wellstone and his family, to ask them to not forget us in this troubled nation.
Lynn and I are assembling candles and other artifacts for the altar that we plan to put up to commemorate our personal dead, complete with representatives from my calacas collection and Robert Lentz’s Mother of the Disappeared. (I will also post a picture.) Perhaps this year I will also develop a virtual altar where you may see the names of those family members and friends who have gone on before us. Heck, if you want to do it, too, I’ll link you!
