The Internet was created to be free. Big Telecommunications wants to make you pay to put out your word on it. Perhaps we should have banned advertising on it as some suggested years ago. Now we who use it to reach out to friends and to voice our concerns in the electronic town meeting find our blogs threatened by financial enclosures. Where are those conservatives who spread the false rumor of a modem tax ten years ago when Clinton was president? Private industry wants the power to tax us without representation: this is the legacy of George the Third. You can stop it now by spreading the word and giving a donation to put an ad in the nation’s newspapers
Common Cause reports:
We know the big telecom companies are feeling the heat. A vote in the House Commerce Committee on the COPE Act (H.R. 5252) was better than we expected, with a number of Representatives switching from their earlier positions – in no small part because of hearing from people like you.(2)
The full House will vote on the COPE Act this month, so we need to ramp up our efforts now. Your financial support at this time could make a big difference!
There is still time to counter the huge telecom lobby apparatus with their slick TV ads and big footprint in the halls of Congress, but we need millions of people pulling on our side.
