Dream

square374I’m driving from San Bernardino to my home in Orange County. There’s some kind of storm or another natural disaster blocking the direct route, so I resolve to get there by heading towards San Diego and then cutting across the mountains via the Rattlesnake Highway. But as soon as I do, there’s trouble. Mud flows across the road. Tanks park along the side. Four inch long pipes sticking out of the pavement replace the speed bumps. I hit one.

Another driver calls to me to say that I will be all right. A woman makes me and the other drivers pull over to the side of the road. All of this has been arranged so that I can speak. What about? What is in my heart, I gather. So I feel a sermon coming out about the need for us to forget the coarse divisions and unite once more, to be a singular people.
