There are people who suffer from organic brain dysfunctions and there are kooks. You put the former on medications, for the most part, and they shed their odd ideas. The latter persist in believing them no matter what evidence is presented to them. These include people like Ann Coulter, believers in alien abductions, psychics, quacks, etc. The hallmark of such oddballs is “show me what I say is not true”. The answer, of course, is to point out that you can’t disprove a negative: it is up to them to show that it is true.*
Today I received a comment from an emissary of God who declared that I was “a dirty hippie liberal”. Of course, I suspect that his only reason for making this attack was to promote his own blog so I deleted it. And I had to laugh. He could hardly call me a hippie knowing my attitudes about drugs and psychic phenomena. As for dirty, it’s clear that he didn’t follow me as I showered before and after working out with all the yuppie salesmen and housewives.
And I am proud to be a liberal. The nasty word these days is Fundamentalist. It’s synonymous with “kook and nation-wrecker”.**

*Witness how the War in Iraq is continued to be defended by some. “There were weapons of mass destruction.” “So where were they?” “You can’t prove that they weren’t there.”
Change a few things. “There are still American POWs in Southeast Asia.” “So where are they?” “You can’t prove that they aren’t there.” The force of the wRong ran with that one for quite a while and even got investigations launched to find nothing.
**One thing that might be worse are those who pander to them.
