John Grisham — who opposes the death penalty — has a new nonfiction book about Ron Williamson, a former ball player who was wrongfully convicted of murder after being fingered by the actual killer. We must be thankful for DNA evidence because it has transcended the average jury’s tendency to see odd behavior as evidence of murderous intent. In Williamson’s case, his codefendant Dennis Fritz received life imprisonment. One cannot help but feel that the decision was not made on any impartial grounds but on the feeling that Williamson was somehow “weird” and needing putting down.
