Suppressed in the USA?

Posted on November 13, 2002 in Censorship Citizenship Liberals & Progressives

Gore Vidal published a rant in the Observer about a week before the election. In a polemic entitled “The Enemy Within“, he accuses the Bush Administration of complicity in the events of 9-11.

Question: if Anne Coulter can openly talk about having liberals shot, why wasn’t Vidal’s piece publishable in the USA?

Everyone in the world, I am told, is talking about the article. Except here in the United States where no one seems to have heard of it. As a utilitarian, I believe that freedom of speech is best served by allowing even wild ideas to be expressed in public, if for no other reason than to allow them to be publically scrutinized and rebutted. We’re not getting this chance with Vidal. And what if he is right?

We deserve insights into 9-11. Vidal raises questions about procedures that were not followed, etc. I’d like an independent commission to investigate this. It will never be too late.
