The mass came down the slope between Jeronimo and Muirlands, slithering along like a millipede seeking the cool underside of a rock. It glittered with the chrome parts of hundreds of motorcycles and a couple of firetrucks. A pot-bellied leader wearing a fireman’s hat pulled into the intersection of El Toro and Muirlands fulfilling no function that I could see except gazing at the cars coming the other way. They bore no signs, rang no bells or sirens. I assume that it had something to do with Nine-Eleven. The light favored me and I headed the way they had come, towards Cook’s Corner, local biker bar and today’s haven for those seeking a quick fix of patriotism.
