Afterwards

Posted on November 1, 2007 in Santiago Fire

square402I swung east, down the hill, for the first time in a few days. The cops who had cordoned themselves off with orange cones had disappeared, so I made a left turn and then a right onto Live Oak Canyon Road. Just past Cook’s Corner there was a sign: “Welcome Home” with the seals of the various county and state agencies who had fought the fire. It was too dark to see the area where firemen had set the backfire and I could only faintly smell it. Aside from that, it looked like it had always looked — live oaks crowning the road in a faint turquoise light.

I’ll take the camera out and see what is left of a few places.
