Round One went well. I entered my plea and made arrangements for a hearing. I was the only one who dressed well (even the yuppies wore open-collars and leather jackets) and the only one who addressed the commissioner as “Your Honor” and the bailiff as “Ma’am”.
“Did you study the law to know this stuff?” a kid asked me afterwards. I told him no — books on the topic were available. He could fight his own case. I pointed to his impeccably pressed navy blue Reebok t-shirt and then to my tie. “And when you do it, wear one of these.” I smiled and wished him luck.
The full story will come when all the hearings have been completed.
I feel good. The court and I have the same interest — to see that things are done lawfully. We’re allies in this. There is no reason to treat anyone with disrespect.
