The art of the Aztecs and their neighbors get dismissed as “primitive” by people who base their concept of what gods and goddesses should look on Greek and Roman idolatry. Mesoamerican gods and goddesses seldom appear in their true form: they strut before their worshippers with grafted on parts and other paraphenalia meant to represent their particular attributes. When you look at art showing the people themselves, you see that the artisans of Tenochitlan and its environs knew the shape of the human body full well.
As we walked the streets of Mexico City, we saw faces very much like the ones in today’s Paths of Light Gallery. The DNA of the Aztecs still gets passed from generation to generation.
