The terms “right and left” came into being because the conservatives sat on the right side and the liberals on the left of a European (French?) parliament. It is no more true that our present usage came into being because they indicated some moral value than it is true that the Bible was written in English.
In Washington, the Republicans sit on their right and the Democrats on the left. From the perspective of God, facing them as He would a congregation, the Democrats are on the Right Hand, sitting with the Son.
Personally, I don’t call myself Left because I don’t think the conservatives are Right. A better term for them is the unRight. Boy, are they ever so unright!
On a slightly unrelated matter, part of a comment I made at Karen Zipdrive’s blog on a tired subject:
As for the usage of the term “ad hominem”, I must interject: mere name-calling is not “ad hominem”. It’s just namecalling. “Ad hominem” means “to the person” and specifically refers to this kind of argument: “OK, so you are pro-life. Why do you support the death penalty?” Notice that the purpose of the argument is to expose moral inconsistency. The unRight hates that kind of argument simply because its ideology is so rich in moral inconsistency.
I am not sure if unRighties are just ignorant of the logic they purport to employ or willfully attempting to confuse matters. I’ve known them to do both.
