I love talking on #travel at irc.icq.com because the participants come from all over the world and you get to compare life in other parts of the world.
We got to talking about the fruits we can get in California and Texas vs. those that you can get in Australia. I mentioned cherimoyas (second link here), a larger than fist-sized fruit that looks like an enormous peeled avocado. coastal (who is from Queensland) knew them as custard-apples.
We pay dearly for them here in California, from $3 to $5 for a single piece of fruit. Towards the end of our conversation, which included ^Kat, an astute teenager from Texas:
[21:20] [EmperorNorton] They only attempt to sell them for about four to five weeks a year here. [21:20] [EmperorNorton] ANd they don't keep so well. [21:21] [coastal] ya, they are expensive here emp, and they dont keep, thats true. [21:21] [EmperorNorton] If you eat them a little late, they're finished. [21:21] [EmperorNorton] But if you catch them right at the moment --- MMMMMM! [21:22] [^Kat] kinda like asking your mom for money [21:22] [^Kat] if you ask her at a bad time your in for it but if you ask her just at the right time you might get extra
Ah, how economics change when you age and become independent. Or do they?
