Virginia Mew is still getting over the shock of becoming Top Cat after being Bottom Cat ever since she moved into this household as a pocket-sized kitten. While Tracy’s body remained on the extra chair in the office, Ms. Mew kept sniffing the air and watching carefully. After I took her elder “sister” to the crematory, she roved the house, checking the closets and under the tables.
This morning when I fed her, she held back for a long moment, expecting, I suppose, for Tracy to come charging up and push her out of the way for the first helping. I got to comparing her to the beggar who, as a practical joke, woke up to find himself Sultan: it’s going to take some time for her to get used to the role. When the new kittens arrive in Mid-May (they are still sucking at their mother’s teats as I write this), I hope that she will be well-enough established to stand up for herself and retain her new role as Queen of the Condo.
