Guadalupe 2

Posted on April 11, 2003 in Photos

Yes, I like that little church. It’s call the Porcincula and it’s built around the sacred well that is mandatory for all Marian shrines.

When you click through, check out the picture of the people next to the waterfalls. You’ll probably pick out the gargoyles made to resemble the heads of Quetzacoatl from Teohuacan, an interesting mix of Christian and Aztecan religions. Some translate Guadalupe as a corruption of an Aztec phrase which means “She who steps on snakes”, but here they’ve been enlisted in her service. In the black and white enlargement of part of this, look for the man who is carrying a statue of the Virgin that he seems to be showing around. And check the last picture for a popular Mexican photo album scene: your child riding a donkey in the company of the Virgin, Juan Diego, and John Paul the Second. A few booths offered extra characters such as Mickey Mouse, Tigger, and Spiderman.
